First
work on omni-directional treadmill (ODT) technology began with a
$400K US Army STRICOM contract in 1996. The first unit was
brought to life in a commercial garage in Bloomington, MN. It
was integrated with visuals and sound in an old aeronautical
research shed just off the Naval Postgraduate School golf
course. We walked freely in cyberspace for the first time on
September 15, 1996, using a database of the Ft. Benning, GA,
McKenna MOUT site. After much travel, ODT #1 found a home at the Army Research Lab in Maryland. Over the course of several years, the ARL HRED group lead it through its paces. After 10 years, the unit is still operational.
